In childhood my images were an escape from my surroundings. As an adolescent they were the placard of my rage at an "unfair" world. In college I feared my own work. I could not accept that perhaps over time even I must change.
Told to leave, I was already running, leaving my art behind me to begin a new life. Ebb and flow. Swirling and drifting I attempted to change who I was. Allotting myself a drawing per year. No paintings. No sculpture. I re-focused my creativity towards other paths. The years swept by.
Two years ago I began to draw again for a social club newsletter. Pain, agony of spirit, I was praised yet I could not reconcile the pain within me. Last year the current broke, the cycle stopped. Home, wife, career all lost to me in one terrible month. Within my spirit broke free. My chains, illusions of my fears.
Nurtured, cared for, encouraged by those closest to me, November of '95 I once again put brush to canvas. The last of the old tangents are still being broken away but this new current is swift and strong. Perhaps I had to learn how to swim through life rather than drown in it. Here I am, here I remain, reaching out for the sea."
